The snakes stand for the cycle of life and death, and through their ability to self-renew they are a symbol of rebirth. They also symbolize fertility. Often they are portrayed as guardians of important and mysterious places.
The Oghamschrift was used in Ireland and some western parts of Britain and Scotland, respectively, from the 4th to the 6th century, to offer short texts, in most cases personal names, on the edges of Oghamsteine or on other supporting materials. It is the writing of the druids and later of the witches. The name of the book has strong etymological parallels with Ogma or Ogmios, the old-Irish god of revelation. Whether this God is the author of the Scriptures, or whether the folk etymology produced the reference in retrospect, can not be clarified.
